So it’s Consistency and Uniqueness that are putting these two at the top of the current list. And they are remarkably different places, of course.
Kin Thai Street Eatery is bringin’ it! We just got back from a week in Thailand, visiting Bangkok and Koh Tao, and can attest that owners Napis and Napak are genuinely importing those extraordinary tastes and smells. Totally not surprised that Kin has been recognized by Michelin. What should you try? Um . . . everything! The Tom Kha - coconut soup - maybe the best I’ve had in the States. Gui Chai - chive cakes - so unique, delicate and filling. An egg wrapped Pad Thai? What a relief to not see this dish drowning in oil and unnecessary flavoring. Every time we visit, the kitchen hits the mark! Heck, we didn’t even need reservations on a Saturday night and found ourselves a few stools.
Now flip that over and I recommend Roc & Sol Diner for an entirely different menu and ambiance, but it shares those 2 very important qualities. We watched this restaurant open and struggle a bit initially to find its footing and ultimate vision. I was always hopeful for its survival because its tough to find a great diner with a fun atmosphere, a quality menu, awesome staff and clear attention to detail. Mission accomplished. Every time. Ok, brace yourself for the biggest eggs benedict I’ve ever been served. And Joanne’s mouth will water if she thinks the Creme Brulee French Toast is around the corner. And although I’ll always be jonesing for a NY style [read as jewish] deli in town, my spirits are somewhat sustained with that Corned Beef Reuben.
Yep. Consistency and Uniqueness. No matter the theme, the menu, the origin story . . . these are two qualities worth pursuing every day. Thank you Kin and Roc for showing us how it’s done!
